The BLOCK 2025 House 1

2025

This contemporary gable-roof farmhouse presents a striking reinterpretation of rural design, balancing robust form with refined detail. North-facing and meticulously oriented, the home embraces open-plan living where soaring raked ceilings amplify light and volume, creating interiors that feel expansive yet intimately connected to the landscape.

Sustainability and Resilience underpins the design, with a 7 Star energy rating achieved through integrated water tanks, rain gardens, and a passive solar strategy. Sun-drenched outdoor living spaces are carefully sheltered from prevailing winter winds, offering year-round comfort and a seamless transition between indoors and out.

The façade is clad in Shou Sugi Ban–inspired timber - McCormacks Black Pearl by Bunnings, delivering a rich, textural surface that grounds the building in its environment. Skylights by Velux punctuate the roofline, drawing daylight deep into the plan and animating the interior with shifting patterns of sun.

Conceived by Julian Brenchley of Group Architects—lead architect for The Block since 2003— this residence embodies a synthesis of durability, performance, and architectural expression. The result is a farmhouse reimagined: contemporary yet timeless, sustainable yet indulgent, and designed to live beautifully in both the rhythms of the seasons and the needs and aspirations of modern family life.
